Liberian-born Artist celebrates
Ancestral Virginia Roots and Culture on National Mall!

Washington DC - Acclaimed master storyteller Vera Oye’ Yaa-Anna affectionately known as “Auntie Oye’”, will participate in this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival, to be held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This is Yaa-Anna’s third appearance at the annual festival. Through her storytelling she will celebrate the lives of her Great Grand mother, Charlotte Wills-Gibson who was born in Richmond, Virginia, Liberia’s first president, Joseph Jenkins Roberts, Liberia’s fourth president, James Spriggs Payne and Liberia’s seventh president, Anthony Williams Gardiner of Virginia.

You are invited to bring the entire family on this Storytelling Adventure. “Auntie Oye’, will also perform stories from a wonderful sampler CD she has produced. The CD is full of stories from Africa and her own original tales. Like any master storyteller, Auntie Oye’ knows how to engage her audience at the very beginning of each tale. Her characters include Tweet Tweet and his lucky seersucker shorts; the wife who must get milk from a leopard; Pepe, the bilingual mouse who speaks “Mouse” and “Dog” and the wedding guest who feeds his clothes. One story after another, each better than the last offers up laughs and lessons for everyone. Shhhhh, gather around and listen to Auntie Oye’. You won’t want to miss a word at this FREE PUBLIC EVENT!
